Efficas Care is a specially-formulated medical food for the dietary management of asthma and associated allergies. This formulation reduces the synthesis of leukotrienes by altering the pool of dietary fatty acids (AA, GLA, DGLA, EPA) resident in immune cell phospholipids. AA is the precursor of inflammatory leukotrienes while the other fatty acids act as natural brakes on leukotriene production. Sufficient quantities of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) necessary to alter the resident fatty acid pools and reduce leukotriene production, are not available through a normal diet. Thus, a medical food containing GLA and EPA, in an optimal ratio, is beneficial for the dietary management of asthma and associated allergies. The Efficas Care formula blends GLA and EPA in the optimal 3:2 ratio.
